Review:
"Search for the Hidden Garden: A Discovery with Saint Therese" is author Sherry Weaver Smith's second book in the Pauline Kids' "Friends with the Saints" series. Like her first book, "The Wolf and the Shield: An Adventure with Saint Patrick" the work was a joy to read. As a classroom teacher, I look forward to introducing my fourth graders to this book, which is set in a hidden garden and pulls readers in with the excitement of a treasure hunt. These elements combined enable children to become absorbed in, and mesmerized by, this wonderful historical fiction mystery. However, there are also important life lessons along the way. As the main character, Charlotte, and her friends follow the path of the treasure map, their evolving friendship with Therese takes on a journey of its own. This parallel adventure allows them to learn the importance of true friendship, faith, and the joy of doing for others. Sherry Weaver Smith is not only able to perfectly capture a great story line for children, but also interweaves a significant moral about [the Holy Spirit]. This book is well-written, interesting, and will be enjoyed byreaders of any age. I am eager to share this book, and its lessons, with my students.

"Search for the Hidden Garden is a delightful analogy or parable for the spirituality of St. Therese. Amid the complications of human relationships, childlike determination continues to search for the innocence we are all born with, which embraces all people. While young Therese is a minor character in the story, she is a major influence on their search and ours. Adults and children will enjoy this search, through gentleness, patience, love and joy." -Father Robert Colaresi, Director, Society of the Little Flower, and Director, Carmelite Spiritual Center
