Review:
Whether paddling a kayak through the black silk water of a lake, or roasting the perfect marshmallow -- crisp and brown on the outside, all sweet liquid within -- it's an adventure young readers will never forget! A comforting story for parents preparing to take young children camping for the first time. Ages 4-8.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2?A camping trip that captures the spirit of nature and a loving relationship. Told from a granddaughter's perspective, the narrator's voice speaks in childlike words and thoughts. Even so, elegant, spare language makes use of well-chosen images to paint the environment and the youngster's feelings about it: "A heron wings over our heads. Great blue shadow. Pterodactyl." The two spend a night in sleeping bags, and "In the morning I pop my head out of the tent. The moon floats low in the bluing sky like a balloon left from a night party." Garns's full-color, realistic illustrations evoke the setting masterfully, with light changing to reflect the time of day. Outstanding composition and use of light and shadow make each double-page spread a viewing pleasure, and the text is placed effectively over the pictures. Reminiscent of Uri Shulevitz's Dawn (Farrar, 1974) for its mood and Amy Hest's Rosie's Fishing Expedition (Candlewick, 1994) for its depiction of familial ties, When I Go Camping stands out as a most memorable experience. Best for story time, but fine for independent readers as well.?Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA
