Grade 2-4-- Mediocre texts detract from the appealing format in these introductions. Butterfly and Spider focus on the life cycle of the swallowtail butterfly and the garden spider, and briefly describe some of their physical characteristics, behavior, and diet. Shark offers broader coverage, giving short descriptions of the physical and behavioral characteristics of sharks in general as well as special features of over a dozen different species. A two-page appendix of miscellaneous facts is included in each. Sharp, full-color photographs accompany the narratives; color drawings also appear on alternate pages. Although clearly written and competently organized, each volume omits some important information. The orders and families to which the animals belong are not identified, and few scientific terms are employed. For instance, while Butterfly describes the process of metamorphosis, the term is not used. In Spider , Chinery explains that silk comes from glands at the animal's rear, but does not name the organs that produce it; although he discusses the birth of baby spiders, he does not describe their subsequent stages of growth before reaching maturity. With the exception of Shark , little information on anatomical features is presented and there are no diagrams of the body parts. Little data on natural habitats is given, and none of the texts explain exactly how mating is accomplished.
