From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-4-- Caroline Zucker will never be a match for Ramona Quimby or Anastasia Krupnik. The third grader lives in a Denver suburb with her teacher-father, nurse-mother, and two younger sisters, but these generic titles seem to take place in Anywhere, USA. Caroline is the only character with much depth. . . . Gets Even has two themes--Caroline feels her teacher dislikes her, and she frequently gets in trouble because of a boy teasing her. Neither problem has much resolution. . . . Gets Her Wish gets even slimmer in problem solving--Caroline wants to quit wearing drab colors so she will be noticed as a girl. After some communication problems, the all-too-pat answer is a shopping trip to the mall with her mother. . . . Meets Her Match has the most action as the three Zucker sisters are pitted against a gruff old babysitter who serves them liver and says "No TV." A friendly resolution is reached as Mrs. Gladstone finally remembers raising her own children and loosens up. These problems do ring true, and for readers looking for something short, the books may suffice. However, they have no real food for thought nor much feeling, and there is no thought given to the concept of responsibility for one's actions. Hurwitz's School's Out (Morrow, 1991) is much stronger in its handling of this issue. The pencil drawings have action and expression and add to the attractive format, but they don't make up for poor plotting and shallow characterizations. --Susannah Price, Boise Public Library, ID
