Grade 6-8 Diggs incorporates abundant, practical information on riding, rating a purchase and show competition into this horse crowd pleaser. Just when Marcy's best friend defects to the boy-crazy set at the beginning of eighth grade, Marcy meets a new girl, Natasha, whose sculptor/mother Sasha teaches Marcy to ride. With her parents' hard-won approval, Marcy acquires a gelding and stormily drops her piano studies, symbolic of her structured life. The excitement of her first major show charges the final pages. Like K. M. Peyton's Fly-By-Night (Farrar, 1976; o.p.) and Monday Horses (Greenwillow, 1978; o.p.) by Jean S. Doty, the story moves through its paces with impulsion. Marcy is eventually able to appreciate her own stable home life, which earlier she felt had paled in comparison to Nat's somewhat bohemian life style.
