Grade 4-6 McInerney's fifth Judge Benjamin novel is standard fare for the series. Here the St. Bernard and his mate Agatha Bliss once more enjoy a series of adventures, including pulling a sleigh to the school Christmas pageant, rescuing an elderly woman and having a litter of pups. They are aided and abetted in their endeavors by their owners, the O'Rileys. The story, like the earlier ones, is narrated by Judge Benjamin himself and is complemented by Morrill's pen line illustrations. Unfortunately, due to the episodic nature of the plot, The Superdog Gift never matches the drama of its immediate predecessor, The Superdog Surprise (Holiday, 1985). Still, slapstick humor and banter abound. This fast-paced story is as lightweight as it is lighthearted, but it will be enjoyed by dog lovers and Judge Benjamin fans.
