PreSchool-Grade 1 Three single concept books combine a simple sentence and one drawing per page. The best of the group is Dolphins and Porpoises , which does not have a cartoon spectator and presents text and lively drawings in a straightforward manner. However, the illustrations of four kinds of dolphins are not labeled. Clouds and Stars have cartoon characters, a duck and a bear, respectively, as interested spectators in the illustrations. One point made in Clouds may be misleading: "Who needs all this rain. . . ? Plants do. And so do farmers." Children need to be told that all people need rain. In the illustration of clouds, a close-up section shows drops of water; young audiences may not understand this inset indicates magnification. Tomie dePaola's The Cloud Book (Holiday, 1975) is better for the same audience. The least successful of these books is Stars . A red star, a dwarf and a supernova are artistically rendered as fanciful blendings of color which give an imaginary cast to a book purported to be factual. The bear sitting on top of the planet Earth looking out into space encourages a sense of fantasy also. Fradin's Astronomy (Childrens, 1983), although for a slightly older audience, is a better introduction. Elise Wendel, Orchard Road School, Skillman, N.J.
