Allyn was appointed associate judge of the newly established Territory of Arizona in 1863. He chronicled his trip to Arizona with a brilliant series of letters to an Eastern newspaper and then continued his letters and journals throughout his judicial career. He discusses historical figures such as King Woolsey, Captain Joseph Reddeford Wallker, and Bishop John Lamy. The letters establish Allyn as one of the most talented chroniclers of frontier life in American Arizona.
