From Booklist:
An excellent resource about the history of and topics relating to the American presidency, this revised edition contains approximately 700 alphabetical entries that range from one paragraph to five pages in length. Some entries contain photographs (in black and white) and interesting tables, such as the one showing “Presidential Vetoes, 1789–2008.” This edition contains new entries that include discussions of limits to presidential authority and power (for example, Hamdan v. Rumsfield), new and updated biographies, and a five-page discussion of the Iraq War, including polls from national news organizations. The appendixes, bibliographies, and in-depth index will be a boon to the reader. Appendix 1 highlights sections of the U.S. Constitution that address the powers of the presidency. Appendix 2 contains information about each presidential election in chronological order. Appendix 3 contains a list of the U.S. presidents (including years in office, political party affiliation, and names of vice presidents); “Rating the Presidents” surveys; a table of the history of growth of the executive branch from 1939–2007; and a list of White House offices and their main duties. Two bibliographies include suggested reference materials and Web sites for the presidency and for each individual president. Although most of this information can be found online or scattered in other reference sources, the encyclopedia provides both context and convenience. Any researcher seeking information about the American presidency will find this to be a useful source, and it is recommended for high-school, academic, and public libraries. Also available as an e-book. --Laura Speer
