From Booklist:
Gr. 6^-9. Calabro provides heroic, yet realistic profiles of nine firm believers in the American justice system who arduously represent their clients and causes--among them, Clarence Darrow, Thurgood Marshall, William Kunstler, and Sarah Weddington. The issues discussed range from sexism and Native American property claims to constitutional rights, with several famous cases highlighted, including Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, and the O. J. Simpson trial. The writing is clear, and the explanations of legal concepts are nicely handled. There is also exposure to some sophisticated issues (for example, the elements of a rape case are explicitly detailed). Each chapter includes a brief biography of the attorney and a historical overview of the time period, as well as quotes and photographs. A chronology and further resources conclude each chapter. Exciting reading for teens interested in the law and a good introduction for classroom use. Karen Simonetti
