From Library Journal:
First published in France in 1988, this translation is an important addition for all gardening collections. Gardening history is surveyed, and broad descriptions of gardening design styles are provided. The book offers detailed technical information on all aspects of gardening, including greenhouses, soil structure, irrigation, propagation, diseases, pruning, and planting. An encyclopedia of plants, including trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, and ground covers, fills half of the book. The entries contain information on varieties, hardiness, and cultivation. International climate charts make the book useful in other countries. Biographical sketches of botanists, plant hunters, and writers are also included. While the book has much reference value, its numerous color photographs will make it a book readers will want to borrow as well; consider purchasing one book for reference and one (or more) for circulating collections.
