This easy-to-use and comprehensive reference contains short entries on well over 1000 persons, places, events, institutions, etc., relating to the French Revolution and the early Napoleonic period. It is extremely reliable on definitions and dates, despite a handful of lapses. This work is similar in scope but much different from the two-volume Historical Dictionary of the French Revolution, 1789-1799 , edited by Samuel F. Scott and Barry Rothaus ( LJ 2/15/85). The entries in that are generally longer and written by numerous experts. Paxton's book contains entries on topics not covered in the earlier collection.
