Were the Pharisees unfairly portrayed in the New Testament? What would a wider reading of Luke's Gospel reveal? To begin dialoguing with these questions, J. Patrick Mullen focuses on Simon, the Pharisee of Luke 7:36-50, to study and redeem" the Pharisees of early Judaism. With two methodologies, redactional and anthropological, Mullen discusses these questions and analyzes the Pharisaic movement and first-century Judaism by placing the issues within cultural context. Other topics that arise are the fractures between the Christian and Jewish communities, the development of tradition, and the issues of comparing the various Gospels, especially Luke and Mark. To arrive at a unified reading of Luke, Mullen studies how Luke combines various sources to create a thematic focus and uniquely Lukan portrayal of Jesus. Posing and resolving questions, Dining with Pharisees will help bring readers and students to a deeper understanding of the early Jewish and Christian faith communities.

Review:
Dining with Pharisees invites students to pursue a hermeneutic of ‘anthropological consciousness’ for the joy and challenge of it.Review of Biblical Literature

This is an excellent book written at a level accessible to non-specialists. Its analysis of the issues affecting biblical scholarship and anthropology is especially clear and helpful. His picture of the Pharisees is persuasive; his explanation for the hostility between Jesus and the Pharisees that surfaces in the Gospels is historically plausible.Journal for the Study of The New Testament

Those who open their Gospels and permit Mullen to guide their reading and reflection will be amply rewarded. The Furrow

Here is a good book for those fascinated by the excavation of the texts of the Bible, through various types of criticism. The Living Church

Father Mullen’s work teaches us about Jesus’ life as a first century Jew and gives us an understanding of the Pharisees. Mullen also shows how Luke’s writings influenced the Gospel of Mark in themes and attitudes toward the marginalized.Catholic Library World

In the spirit of the Interfaces series, the author examines in detail the story of the dinner at Simon the Pharisee's home found in Luke 7:36-50, with intriguing parallels in other gospel anointing stories. The Bible Today
