PreSchool-Grade 3-- A collection of less than memorable alphabet verses. The entries are not very adventurous as far as rhymes go, e.g., the Ouranosaurus: "You cannot fail/ To admire my sail./It serves me well/ In the desert where I dwell . . . ." For the most part, Fortey makes an effort to base his poems on factual information. The Kentrosaurus's verse describes its spikes and plates and how it uses them for protection. But others seem to perpetuate stereotypes of "dino stupidity." Wuerhosaurus is said to be "Small of brain and very slow"; Brachiosaurus says, "My brain, I guess, is rather small." Rogan's watercolor cartoons are friendly and funny, but don't take advantage of the humongous pages. Bruce Degen's illustrations in Jane Yolen's Dinosaur Dances (Putnam, 1990) pack a lot more punch in a smaller package, and the dinosaur rhymes are better, too. --Cathryn A.
