Grade 1-3 This beautiful evocation of a time in the author-illustrator's childhood is presented in large delicately colored watercolors and descriptive text. Michl tells of the activities of three friends who in one day explore the Danube, find Puma Island, have mud fights, and clamber over a dam. A young girl joins them, and at the end of the day they toast their soggy sandwiches over a fire. The endpapers are used to name all of the wildlife seen in the story, and a detachable poster shows the boys' discovery of a strange "wild man" described in the story. Included is Michl's request that man not continue to destroy the natural habitat of animals. This story, reminiscent of Thomas Locker's Where the River Begins (Dial, 1984) in its gentle and meticulous depiction of a river journey, could be used in conjunction with class study on ecology.
