[From dust jacket flaps] Every once in a while, a poet comes along whose eloquence moves even the most resistant heart. Such a lyrist [sic] is Auta Lee Reed, for, with sensitivity and awareness, she captures the very quintessence of life. With the initial sentence in the title poem, "In the sunset of her soul / She remembered summer," the poet sets the mood for her memories and, with rare perception, records the subtle emotions felt by all God's creation. Love is, to the poet, a Chippewa mother affectionately weaving cloth to protect her sleeping child, and hope is ?a pull of mind that sends / Men following a dream / Using impossible means / Toward improbable ends." Kindness is "tending people gardens / Everywhere," and despair, ?chiseled lines of mental pain / Creasing a brow too soon furrowed.? With mystical wonder, she laments the shortcomings of her craft when she vainly tries to capture the miracle of the Master's Hand as a hummingbird unerringly "finds the nectar ? he sips," and like a gentle lady at the end of life's journey, autumn comes, golden leaves fall and "the aspen, shivering, grieves.? In winter, the poet puts the "vibrant, living earth" to rest "beneath her layered blanket" of white. This talented writer uses similes and metaphors to cut to the center of ultimate truth with all the precision of a skilled surgeon, yet her creative endeavor is tempered by warmth and clothed with respect for the dignity of man. For the discriminating reader, Mrs. Reed's beautiful poems will, indeed, provide Moments ? Long Remembered. [From back of dust jacket] AUTA LEE N. REED was born on a farm in the Cross Timber section of Texas and, in her own words, grew up ?as free as the south wind that swept our meadow." She attended Randolph College, Daniel Baker College, New Mexico Highlands University, Sul Ross University and Texas Tech, and has earned both a B.A. and an M.S. The writer taught on the elementary, high school and college levels before her recent retirement. Although she has had numerous articles published, this is her first volume of verse.
