From Library Journal:
Although Lomax does not use Nashville's more familiar nickname, ``Country Music Capital of the USA,'' as a subtitle, his book really is exclusively for country fans. The longest section is a country music history focusing on the post-1968 years. Unfortunately, Lomax appears more concerned with the numbers documenting country's rising popularity than with what's happening to the music. Today's biggest starsAlabama, Kenny Rogers, Barbara Mandrellusually produce country's blandest, most commercially calculating albums. Bill Malone's recently revised standard history Country Music USA (Univ. of Texas Pr., 1985) offers a much more telling analysis of current developments. However, Lomax's book still merits recommendation. The 230 color and black-and-white photos are excellent; the explanation of the inner workings of the music business isfirst-rate; and the travel guide to Nashville is essential reading for anyone planning a trip to Opryland.
