This 'capsule' index telescopes the pageant of 19th-century American life. Similar in approach and format to the first two volumes of the series (17th and 18th centuries), this third volume indexes 161 books, a representative selection usually found in major public, school, and academic libraries. Books for young adults are included, two-thirds published in the last two decades. The author includes 5,000 different subjects, stressing family and home life, the arts, education, sports and recreation, science, clothing, and furniture, and many famous personalities, including Native Americans and women. Essential to American and many foreign libraries.

About the Author:
Norma Olin Ireland (University of Akron; Western Reserve University Library School), a certified "genealogy researcher," has worked as a reference librarian in Ohio and California, directed the Ireland Book and Library Service with her late husband. She also managed the Ireland Indexing Service after his passing; done freelance indexing and research and taught reference work at the University of Southern California Library School. She has written columns for several magazines and newspapers and over 130 magazine articles.
From Library Journal:
This is the fourth and final volume of the Index to America series compiled by Ireland (the others are: . . . 17th Century 1978; . . . 18th Century 1976;. . . 19th Century 1984; all Scarecrow). Concerned with social life and customs rather than with historical events, it is an alphabetical listing of a comprehensive range of subjects, done in the familiar Scarecrow style. No pretence has been made to scholarship, and cited sources, publications chosen because they are "easily available in libraries," include the World Almanac, The People's Almanac , and People magazine. (The author apparently compiled the index from small and mid-sized community libraries.) Because of this limited scope, the indexing is erratic: a citation on the Academy Awards leads to a list that ends in 1974; Lee Iacocca's opinions are cited heavily; and the excellent Time/Life set The Fabulous Century (1969, 1970) is not included. While no similar index exists on a purely popular level, it should be used with caution. For small public and school libraries.
