This revised edition provides a registry of criticism on seventy-eight writers of Mexico in all genres and periods. Foster updates coverage on the fifty authors included in the original 1981 edition, but over half of the listings represent additional authors. Coverage includes monographs and critical articles in academic, intellectual, and literary-cultural journals in Mexico, Latin America, the United States, and Europe. In addition to the seventy-eight sections on writers, there are over twenty-five sections on general topics.

About the Author:

David William Foster, Regents' Professor of Spanish at Arizona State University and Director of Spanish Graduate Studies, oversees the publishing program of the Latin American Center at Arizona State. He has published extensively on Hispanic literary and linguistics topics, particularly with reference to Argentina, Mexico, and Brazil and has been engaged for the last twenty-five years in providing bibliographic coverage for Latin American literature.

Following the format of the original edition ( LJ 11/15/81), Foster divides his bibliography into two major sections. Part 1 (General References) moves hierarchically from broad literary topics to specific genres and periods. The much larger Part 2 (Authors) expands coverage from the 50 writers included in the earlier edition to 83, with each selection based on the existence of "significant academic literary scholarship" (excluding dissertations and theses) about them. The number of entries--all unannotated--per writer ranges from a few to several hundred, with increased emphasis on pre-20th century authors. Most citations are in Spanish. The format is clear and straightforward, though greater publication data on lesser-known journals cited would have been welcome.
