Today’s busy early childhood practitioners are being asked to do more, know more, and produce “results,” especially in the area of literacy development. This premier volume in TC Press’s Practitioner’s Bookshelf offers valuable information for leaders in preschool settings and pre-kindergarten classrooms. A handy reference, it covers key aspects of literacy learning and teaching, including child development, standards, curriculum planning, assessment and accountability, professional development, and home–school connections. Attention is given throughout to issues related to linguistic and cultural diversity among children and families, and all chapters end with “leadership strategies” that serve as a quick guide for action and reflection.

Offering a variety of practical ideas, this indispensable volume:

  • Provides a convenient resource for today’s early childhood leaders.
  • Features a format that can be read from cover to cover or can be accessed at key points of interest.
  • Illustrates what a Pre-K literacy program looks like in action.
  • Can be used as a text in early childhood courses as well as professional development settings.

Book Description:

“A ‘must-read’ for anyone who wants to start children out right learning—and enjoying—literacy.
—From the Foreword by
Barbara T. Bowman
, Chief Officer, Office of Early Childhood Education, Chicago Public Schools

“In the current era of accountability, leaders of early childhood programs find themselves responsible for improving and evaluating the literacy outcomes of preschool children, a task for which many are unprepared. This gem of a book summarizes the core knowledge they need and includes practical tools to guide decisions about curriculum, instructional strategies, and learning environments.”

Sue Bredekamp
, Director of Research, Council for Professional Recognition, Washington, DC

“An extraordinarily rich resource about early literacy and ways to support it. This book is a must-read reference for every preschool leader out there!”

Judith Schickedanz
, Boston University

“A comprehensive guide on what early childhood professionals need to know and be able to do in order to become competent literacy leaders. After reading this practical and information-rich resource, we have no excuse for not making early language and literacy development job # 1.”

Maurice Sykes
, Executive Director, Early Childhood Leadership Institute, University of the District of Columbia

“Leaders who implement the practices recommended in this book will be assured of success – and children and their families will be the beneficiaries. This is not only a ‘must-read’ book; it is a ‘must-do’ blueprint...”
Sharon Landesman Ramey
, Susan H. Mayer Professor for Child and Family Studies, Director, Georgetown University Center for Health and Education
