PreSchool-- In each of these picture books, holiday concepts are presented in brief, simple terms. To celebrate Halloween, a young girl selects her costume and goes trick-or-treating with her mother. Hanukkah places the holiday in a historical context, and then gives several examples of current observance; it is the better of the two books in that it presents a well-rounded overview. In both, the rhyming texts, uneven in quality, are mediocre at best. Poetic license is taken with both rhyme and meter; both content and style are immature. From Halloween : "Let's dump our bags onto the floor./ Your bag's not empty--see, there's more!;" from Hanukkah , "One year from now--if we can just wait--/ all over the world we'll again celebrate!" Full-color illustrations on each page are insipid, lacking in whimsy, humor or emotional appeal.
