Grade 4-6-- Two imported cookbooks that have not crossed the ocean gracefully. Bake contains 21 recipes for fancy cookies and cakes, calling for such items as hedgehog tins and requiring the decorating skills of professionals. Cook offers 28 recipes in addition to the usual safety and cooking tips. The use of an electric mixer with knead hooks and separated eggs in a souffle indicate the need for an experienced cook. Nutrition is stressed, but there is an abundance of cream, eggs, and cheese in the recipes. Some breakfast kebobs that include raw vegetables won't go down well with many American children, and few of them will eat creamed spinach, even if cute egg and tomato toadstools are standing in it. Wheatflakes, millet, and parchment paper will be unfamiliar to many, and saffron is prohibitively expensive. With so many good, general cookbooks available, these two are not necessary. Try Better Homes and Gardens New Junior Cook Book (Meredith, 1989), or Kids Cook!
