This volume presents the results of three years of bilateral dialogue involving the United Methodist Church, the, three church bodies that formed the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The topic for the dialogue was chosen because the nature of episcopacy has become a focus of ecumenical discussion and difficulty. This book includes the complete text of the dialogue report, which describes the present level of-consensus and the relationship of episcopacy to the broader topic of ministry. Theological and historical essays provide background for further study and discussion among the churches. JACK M. TUELL is bishop of the California Pacific Conference of the United Methodist Church and served as chairperson of the United Methodist delegation. ROGER W. FJELD is president of Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and served as chairperson of the Lutheran delegation.
