Here he offers a collection of interrelated short stories that takes place in the fictional small town of San Miguel, NM, during the 1950s and 1970s. Centered on Mosco Zamora, an alcoholic veteran of World War II, the first set of stories is lighthearted. But the second set, which features Vietnam vet Johnny Barros, brings the war back home to San Miguel. By the time Barros returns to New Mexico, the stories of Mosco's burning rosary and La La La Chevalier's tortilla, scorched with the image of her dead love, are distant dreams of a lost world.
