About the Author:
Rhonda Gowler Greene has fond memories of being at her grandma’s. She remembers driving a tractor, climbing huge trees, and catching lots of fireflies. Ms. Greene is the author of Barnyard Song and The Stable Where Jesus Was Born. A former preschool and elementary teacher, she lives in West Bloomfield, Michigan, with her family.
Karla Firehammer enjoyed working on this book as it brought back memories shared with her grandmother, gardening and baking raspberry pie and cinnamon muffins. Ms. Firehammer has illustrated several books for young readers, including The Flea’s Sneeze, If the Shoe Fits, and From the Doghouse: Poems to Chew On, for which she helped create intricate, hand-beaded illustrations. She lives in Lenexa, Kansas, with her three dogs.
From Booklist:
*Starred Review* PreS-Gr. 1. Greene's simple narrative considers what awaits a grandchild who visits Grandma's house. Resonant imagery abounds in the rhyming text ("Big bed / Yellow sun / Breakfast bread with cinnamon"), and a large typeface and a smaller-than-standard trim size (eight-by-eight inches) make the book especially appealing to little ones. It's the charming artwork, however, that drives the story, pushing the text's gentle humor up a notch. Sweetly funny details--doggy bike helmets, bunny slippers that close their eyes to nap, and Grandma Dog's pet cat--brighten the cheerful, softly colored pictures, as a gradually deepening color palette marks the passage of day. Starlight fills the room as tired Grandma and her sleepy little visitor prepare for bed after a busy, happy day: "Big bed / Silver light / Hug and kiss . . . to say good night." A loving, deeply satisfying story that lights up the path toward sweet dreams. Ahhh . . . Traci Todd
