Grade 3-6-- A clearly written, easy - to-read book that recounts the basic facts of this famous 1953 mountaineering achievement. Concentrating on Hillary and Tenzing's successful summit attempt, both text and illustrations sanitize the endeavor, making it more accessible for a younger audience than the original source material. The physical hardships and risks endured by the expedition members are detailed, and passing reference is made to the 13 men who had died since 1922 attempting the climb, but the text is so brief that the emotional impact of these facts is slight. Fraser does a good job of pointing out that a small army of support team members and the knowledge gained from previous expeditions were necessary to the success of this attempt. The beautifully rendered paintings convey something of the magic of the changing light on the harsh landscape of snow, ice, and rock. Each page is embued with a bit of the joy that motivates some to climb, despite the risks.
