Grade 2-5 Lewis calls The Snow Queen ``one of the greatest invented fairy tales ever written,'' placing it (on its smaller scale) with the great quest tales. Few would argue. From the moment that the demon's mirror shatters and a shard lodges in Kay's eye, making him wicked and ripe for kidnapping, until Gerda brings him back, after risking her life searching from Denmark almost to the Pole, the action never stops (although, like the great quests, it tells smaller stories along the way). Remarkably, too, the strong characters are all women. This fluent translation, copyrighted in 1968, stands up to the best: Keigwin (definitive until 1938, can be found in Scribners, 1972; o.p.), Leyssac (HBJ, 1938; o.p.), Haugaard (Doubleday, 1974), and LeGallienne (Harper, 1985; o.p.). The illustrations, glowing with the splendor of the seasons, measure well against those of Dulac (Doubleday, 1976), LeCain (Viking, 1979), Marcia Brown (Scribners, 1972; o.p.), and the other big guns who've taken it on. Barrett's realistic full-color paintings on almost every page of this large format picture book capture the magic.
