Chimp and Zee, mischief-making monkeys from Jungletown, are friends, "rain or shine." Younger children who watched their older siblings giggle at the pair's antics in Chimp and Zee will be pleased to have the monkeys all to themselves in this small, extra-sturdy board book. Together, Chimp and Zee slurp purple Popsicles, hide in a tree, and curl up in bed, waiting for their good night kisses. With only four two-page spreads, albeit brightly colored ones with rhyming text, this is not a book young readers will spend hours on. But, along with Chimp and Zee's Noisy Book, also by Catherine and Laurence Anholt, it serves as a light, brief introduction to the impish monkeys: "Ha, ha, ha! PreSchool-Babies and toddlers can easily follow these rhythmic texts. In Noisy, the two chimpanzees are shown sounding off with a dog ("Woof woof woof!"); a seal ("Clap clap clap!"); a lion ("Roar roar RO-OO-AR!"); an alligator ("Snap snap snap!"); and with objects such as a horn ("Toot toot toot!"), pots ("Bang crash bang!"), and a fire truck ("Vroom vroom vroom! Clang clang CLANG!"). In Monkey Around, listeners are encouraged to participate in the activities such as pointing to the animals, licking a Popsicle, and giving the chimps a kiss goodnight. The bright artwork done in primary colors and using simple lines makes the objects easily identifiable for this audience. Both interactive stories can be successfully used in baby programs.
