PreS-K. Curtis has collected quotes from children about the silly things they did "when they were young." The interviewees range in age from two to six, and a photograph of each child illustrates his or her quote. Curtis' photographic technique is quite interesting: she uses color negatives but "de-saturates" and "re-saturates" the color, so that, ultimately, the photos look like hand-painted black-and-white photos. Among the images is one of three-year-old Nathan, with a toy giraffe in his mouth: "When I was a baby, I sucked on paper and trees and tables and giraffes. I was a pretty sucky kid." Cassidee, age six, poses in front of a bowl: "When I was one, I ate dog food." Curtis' photographs are what make this book special, capturing ordinary children reflecting on themselves. reSchool-Grade 2-These recollections of children, ages three to six, on what it was like to be little are sure to evoke laughs. Each page features at least one black-and-white photo (with sections saturated in color) against a black background. A one- to two-line reminiscence in white type accompanies each picture. The book is divided into sections such as "Being Born," "Tales from the Crib," and "It Was the Best of Times." Adults will have a hard time reading this one with a straight face and most youngsters will want to share their own memories. A great story starter for groups.
