Kindergarten-Grade 2?As retold here, the stories of Noah, Joseph, Moses, David, and the first Christmas emphasize family themes and youthful achievement. Daniel and Jonah model obedience to God's will. The Good Samaritan, Jairus's daughter, and the miracle of the loaves and fishes exemplify God's loving response to human need. Adams's style is folksy but not cutesy, simple and meant to be read aloud. Not all of the violence has been eliminated (when the wicked officials are thrown to Daniel's lions, their families are tossed in, too). The crucifixion and resurrection are not included. The crayon-and-watercolor illustrations are bright, informal, and cartoonlike; typically, they consist of one larger picture with several vignettes interspersed throughout the text. Costumes and faces are simplified, and settings and details are minimal; the overall effect is unsophisticated but inviting. The generous typeface might encourage beginning readers undeterred by long lines.
