Tried and true favorites ranging from "Humpty Dumpty" to "Twinkle, Twinkle" are presented in their most familiar and unabridged forms, e.g. the farmer's wife does cut off the mice's tails and the baby and cradle do fall from the treetop. Less familiar rhymes, sayings, and ditties--albeit no less pleasing in cadence and imagery--provide welcome textual variations. The selections are loosely grouped by subject on over 40 double-page spreads, although the arrangement is more a convenience for the supporting illustrations than an absolute classification system. An index of first lines is included. Whimsical vignettes that will delight listeners and readers alike accompany each verse. Langley's wavering black-pen outline and bright watercolors are similar to those of the Ahlbergs, and are just as engaging. From his endearing generic people, with their raisin-dot eyes and pug noses, to his animals and toys that are full of personality and charm, his style suits this presentation. Multiracial characters are depicted with disarming ease, ignoring stereotypical assumptions about the nature of traditional nursery rhymes. Many tiny drawings are used to create eye-catching borders and details. An amusing collection in an appealing format.
