From Library Journal:
Barth (1886-1968), arguably the greatest modern Protestant theologian, gave these lectures on the first chapter of John's Gospel in 1925-26 and 1933. After an introduction, the commentary is divided into three parts, covering vv. 1-18, 19-34, and 35-51, with all but a few pages devoted to the first 18 verses. Each verse is given in English and then in transliterated Greek, with a detailed commentary following. Without forsaking critical exegesis, the commentary emphasizes how the Word (Jesus Christ) confronts the reader through the Gospel. Knowledge of Greek is helpful, but not necessary, and there is some untranslated Latin. Recommended for collections emphasizing Scripture or Barth. Augustine J. Curley, Newark Abbey, N.J.
