Gr 1-4 A disappointing entry in the series. Billed as an introduction ``to some really far-out vehicles,'' Supertrucks touches on over 40 trucks, vans and buses, many of which are unique models custom designed to perform a specific operation. Police, military, construction and novelty vehicles are among those selected: the longest bus, the largest fire engine, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, the Moonscope. Brief text, unattractively printed within blocked areas, is accompanied by unexciting, often blurred black-and-white photographs. A comparison of the picture of NASA's crawler-transporter in this book with the vivid color photo in Jerry Bushey's Monster Trucks & Other Giant Machines on Wheels (Carolrhoda, 1985) points dramatically to the lack of success of Supertrucks. Also written for a similar age group is George Ancona's excellent Monster Movers (Dutton, 1983). Admittedly, the three books don't touch on exactly identical vehicles, but their scopes are similar.
