About the Author:

Adrian Hadland is the deputy executive director of the Social Cohesion and Integration Research Program at the Human Sciences Research Council. He is a former assistant editor at The Argus, and has published five books, including The Life and Times of Thabo Mbeki and Thabo Mbeki (They Fought for Freedom). Karen Thorne is the director of Mediaworks, a South African nongovernmental organization specializing in service provision to the small media sector. She has extensive experience in the community media sector, encompassing community and independent print, radio, and audiovisual media.
