Gr. 5-7. In these books in the Behind the Camera series, Shields profiles prominent, still-active filmmakers, focusing on their individual styles and working methods and on their places in the history of film and American culture. Discussing the making of, nature of, and response to each film, the author doles out praise and criticism evenhandedly, portraying Lucas as a brilliant technician with a gift for capturing the cultural moment but an inability to work easily with others and Lee as a gifted gate-crasher with a tendency to overdo both satire and sentimentality in his work. Aside from a quick tour of Skywalker Ranch and a photo of the Lee family at a basketball game, readers get only occasional glimpses of these icons' private lives. Shields tucks in substantial quoted passages from his subjects and from critics alike plus a selection of large color stills and publicity photos, then closes with useful lists of books, Web sites, and films. Both works are afflicted with typos, but they still make worthwhile reading for budding filmmakers and general readers with an interest in the history of movies. John Peters
