From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-7-Logically presented and attractive, these volumes detail the lives of two religious leaders/scholars involved in Colonial politics. Both emphasize the early religious influences and experiences of the men and present their subject in favorable but not glowing light. Mather was a voice of reason during the Salem Witch trials and played a diplomatic role in Colonial relations with England. Edwards played an important role in "The Great Awakening," the Colonial spiritual movement that began in the 1730s, preached among Native American tribes, and wrote some philosophical treatises. While the author details their lives thoroughly, including failings as well as triumphs, she fails to make clear the full significance of these men's lives in our history. Unfamiliar terms are highlighted throughout the books and defined in the glossaries. Black-and-white and full-color photos and reproductions are scattered throughout both volumes. Useful for assignments on Colonial figures.
