Gr 8 Up-An overview of this disease that discusses its history, causes and effects, diagnosis, and effect on patients and caregivers. While generally accurate, some treatments described are out-of-date. Thorazine is no longer used; there are other more effective drugs. Also, electric shock is no longer an accepted treatment. In addition, several new drugs marketed within the last two years are not mentioned. There is little discussion of social and monetary issues, e.g., the fact that managed care makes it difficult for patients to get medical treatment.
