The four general types of terrorist groups and their purposes form a basis for grasping the concept of using violence to achieve a goal. Varying levels of violence are practiced by different factions of the same group while sizes and sophistication of terrorist organizations also vary widely. These points reduce generalization about such groups and put to rest some commonly held misconceptions. In opposition to The Terrorists (HarperCollins, 1983) by Milton Meltzer, who believes terrorism to be a futile tactic, this book recognizes it as effective for some groups.
