Gr 5-7-These collections offer a number of well-known and readily available tales, such as ``The Sword in the Stone,'' ``Johnny Appleseed,'' and ``Paul Bunyan.'' Lesser-known stories are included as well, but the retellings on the whole are poor. Most end abruptly, and the storyteller's voice is often inconsistent within each one. The brief introductory information provided for most selections centers on geographic origins. No bibliography or notes are included in either volume. Europe leans heavily towards the British Isles. Both volumes contain a number of British spellings. Ingpen's full-color illustrations are nicely done, but they sometimes contradict the text. In ``The Moon in the Millpond'' (Americas), the text describes the animals as dressed in clothes, yet they are clearly unclothed in the pictures. A number of smaller, uninteresting, black-ink drawings are also included. Look elsewhere for better versions of these tales.-George Delalis, Oakland Public Library, CA
