Grade 8-12-- Not simply the story of one explorer's adventures, this account of Daniel Boone is also a definition of his place in the history of America's continental expansion. It opens with the 1778 Indian attack on Boonesborough in Kentucky, moves back and out for an inclusive view of preceding and contemporary events and realities, and then returns to the Boonesborough scene for its conclusion. Cavan succeeds in imparting a dramatic sense of the frontier and of the courage it took to wrest the Ohio River country from enraged native inhabitants. He conveys the fortitude required of women and children left behind to fend for themselves in the wilderness. While Boone's controversial surrender to Shawnee Indians and his disastrous handling of legal and financial matters are well covered, no mention is made of the child born to his wife, Rebecca, during his extended absence from home. Quotations are interspersed in the text, but are not footnoted. The many fine illustrations are credited as to source, but few are dated. The book itself is a visual delight with its well-executed cover and its clean layout with generous white expanses.
