Jean Jackson lives with her family in Seattle, Washington. Vera Rosenberry lives with hers in Salt Lake City. Even so, they got together on Thorndike and Nelson.

PreSchool-Grade 2-The two monster friends who first appeared in Thorndike and Nelson (DK, 1997) are together again. This time, Thorndike has a new cell phone and he's receiving strange calls. A voice that sounds oddly familiar warns, "I have big lips and hairy arms, and I'm only five blocks away!" Trying to distract themselves by crunching on caterpillar crisps and playing "Pin the Teeth on the Dragon," the companions become increasingly uneasy as the phone keeps ringing and the caller gets closer. Heavy rain and flickering lights add to the tension. All ends pleasantly, however, when the caller's identity is revealed and the mystery is solved. The brightly colored ink-and-watercolor cartoons portray two green monsters with overbites that are more silly than scary. Thorndike's home decor includes spider webs and furniture with real claw feet, and Nelson's dog resembles a dalmatian with a bulbous nose, fangs, and an overgrown crewcut. Children who enjoy Tony Ross's I'm Coming to Get You! (Dial, 1987) will delight in the suspense and relish the satisfying resolution here.
