Grade 6 Up. A wonderful overview of the Revolutionary War era. The book opens in 1775 with Paul Revere's ride and ends with Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown. Although the lengthy descriptions of the battles and the political discussions are a bit dry, this title's strength lies in its introduction to the personalities of the times. For example, the editors reveal that Cornwallis refused to humiliate himself by personally surrendering, and appointed a deputy to hand over his sword. Not to be outdone, Washington had his own deputy accept the sword. It is often difficult to find the real George Washington, the all-too-human man behind the Gilbert Stuart painting, and the editors do an admirable job at bringing him to life. Washington is just one of the many figures who leaps off the page. The four essays included focus on daily life in the colonies as seen through the diary of a Quaker woman; the role of the Iroquois in the War; the pamphleteers who fanned the fires of liberty; and the life of a common soldier.
