Taken from Chapter 8: Peruvian clothing Native clothing The Quechua-speaking people are the largest Native group in Peru. Quechua girls and women wear several layers of long, handwoven skirts. These skirts are usually black, but they are decorated with bright, colorful trimming. A short cape, or lliclla, is wrapped around the shoulders or draped over the head. Native men wear a shirt, vest, or coat over their calf-length or full-length black trousers. A brightly colored sash is sometimes knotted at the waist. In the mountain region, a poncho or serape provides necessary warmth on chilly nights. The poncho is pulled over the head, whereas the serape opens at the front, like a jacket.
