Taken from Chapter 7: Music and dance Dancing into modern times Today, dance and music are a part of family gatherings, weddings, and other celebrations. Traditional dances take two forms, shuffling and leaping. In shuffling dances, dancers step in time to the right or left to distinct rhythms and melodies, almost dragging their feet as they move. Shuffling is a more ancient dance that comes from the mountainous regions. A lot of strength goes into the fancy turns, jumps, and twisting moves of the leaping dances. Before Christian soldiers, passing through the country on the way to war, brought couples dancing to Greece, people did not dance together. Even now, many dances are performed solo.
