These are turbulent, unpredictable, yet opportune times for Canadian forestry. Never before have competing demands on Canada’s forest resources been so great. At the same time, we are finally being forced to confront the sustainable limit of these resources. Now, the improbable has happened: government, industry, First Nationa, and NGOs appear to be part of an emerging consensus that industrial forestry in Canada must change.

The Wealth of Forests is a pioneering attempt to grapple with the policy implications of the transition to sustainable forestry. While much has been written on the theory and practice of sustainable forestry and on the relative merits of regulatory versus market approaches to environmental protection, these literatures have nnot as yet been bridged. Using illustrations based on recent developments in British Columbia forest policy, this collection provides that bridge by analyzing the potential and limits of market, regulatory, and other policy instruments as means of achieving sustainability.

Featuring new work by many of Canada’s leading forest policy scholars, this interdisciplinary collection is devoted to translating the concept of sustainability into practice in key areas of forest policy, including tenure, timber pricing, forest practices, land-use zoning, and eco-certification. The Wealth of Forests also considers how domestic and international legal regimes might constrain the adoption of policies that could bring us close to the elusive goal of sustainable forestry.

About the Author:
Christopher Tollefson is an associate professor in the faculty of law at the University of Victoria.
Review:
The ideas are dazzling, imaginative, and innovative. The authors don't pretend to have all the answers to the dilemma of how to restructure BC's most important industry. They do make a major contribution to the discussion. (Stephen Hume The Vancouver Sun)

The book contains 15 thoughtful essays on a wide range of forest policy topics, all taken from the viewpoint of foresters in British Columbia. A large part of each essay, however, has broad applicability. People more current with British Columbia than this reviewer may find the book somewhat outdated, but it remains a sophisticated and well-constructed overview for the rest of us. (John C. Gordon, School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University Journal of Industrial Ecology, Volume 5, Number 1, 2001)

Recommended. (B.D. Orr Choice May 1999)

Industrial forestry in North America is at a crossroads. A broad consensus has emerged that both the practice and theory of forestry must change in order to achieve sustainability.

This book is a pioneering attempt to consider the concrete policy implications of the much discussed transition to sustainable forestry. It integrates two distinct academic literatures: one that seeks to define and identify ways to implement sustainable forestry, and another that focuses on the relative merits of regulatory and market instruments for promoting environmental values.
