They include those who built the foundations of 20th-century business and finance, such as Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, and Henry Ford, as well as those who affected cultural changes, such as Madame C. J. Walker and Louis B. Mayer. The final two profiles are of An Wang and Bill Gates, pioneers of the electronic era. All of the biographical sketches begin with an introduction that describes a major turning point in these figures' lives, followed by a discussion of their youth, education, and early careers. Other sections explain how each person achieved success and analyze the long-term impact of their empire. The authors are objective about their subjects, describing both their strengths and flaws. Each profile includes a full-page, black-and-white portrait of the individual, and most also feature average-quality additional illustrations. Although this book will probably not draw a large audience, it provides a balanced introduction to a group of people who have often been either lionized or vilified.
