Ruth Brown is the author-illustrator of many beloved books for children, including The Old Tree: An Environmental Fable. She lives in England.

Bo and his younger brother, Billy, two mice reminiscent of a Beatrix Potter tale, are completely out of food. (Open the kitchen cabinet flaps for proof.) They embark on a journey to the human kitchen, traversing the expansive rooms of an old, dark house, shown in double-page spreads. Bo charges forward, giving instructions, while Billy proceeds with caution, fearing the possibility of a feline presence. Each nook and cranny they investigate creates a disagreement. Billy spies the cat under a leafy celery stalk, behind a drape, and beneath a chair (all revealed by lifting flaps). Bo thinks Billy has mistaken common household objects for something they are not. Finally, the cat pounces (across two pages) from its hiding place, revealing itself only to Billy, who manages to escape, but his brother still doesn’t believe him. The lush illustrations and interactive flaps give this story lots of appeal, and younger siblings who open the final flaps (the mice’s front door) will enjoy knowing that Billy will soon be vindicated.
