Review:
Imagine hearing that tiny, alphabet-reciting toddler in your lap coming to the letter I and blurting, "I is for IBIS." This is how you'll know that Flora McDonnell's ABC is somewhere in the vicinity. In a sea of colorful alphabet books, McDonnell's may be one of the most marvelously unusual. Yet the quirkiness in no way takes away from the value of the book as a learning tool; indeed, with its bold upper- and lowercase letters, full-bleed illustrations, and combination of large and small items on each page, this little board book is matchless. For "Tt," a stately (capitalized) TIGER reposes, with a (lowercase) teapot sitting absurdly on his head. Four cats cruise (oh so cool!) in a sleek red convertible CAR for "Cc." A tiny ladybug perches on a fat, vivid LEMON for "Ll." McDonnell's splashy colors will wow every reader, and the youngest ones will pick up the rudiments of the ABCs (not to mention some impressive vocabulary, too!) in no time. A true original from the creator of I Love Animals and Splash! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
About the Author:
Flora McDonnell began her work on her alphabet book by drawing things that had an obvious link to one another. "It wasn't working, so I decided to choose anything that I happened to like—things that have made an impression on me throughout my life. The minute I did that, the book began to work. I think art and life are like that. You have to enjoy what you are doing in order to do it well."
