From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-3-Enthusiasm radiates from these scattershot surveys of the cosmos: "Some of those tiny twinkling lights you see on starry nights are gigantic-big enough for a million stars like our sun to fit inside them!" Beginning with Galileo's observations, Muirden introduces stars, the constellation Orion, how stars are used to navigate, orbits, meteors, galaxies, and the stellar life cycle. After glancing even further afield at the history of the universe, Stott explains what telescopes and space probes are, and then describes the past and likely future of humans in space. Both books are designed along the same lines, with inset paintings by several artists placed over larger illustrations, also painted, along with true/false questions ("Astronauts never sneeze in space"). Numbered, one or two sentence text blocks also appear on each spread. Though Muirden's assertion that meteors start off "so small that hundreds could fit inside an astronaut's pocket!" isn't the only oversimplification to be found, and Stott devotes a whole spread to black holes without mentioning what causes them, these titles may kindle sufficient interest in astronomical topics to send young readers, or those reading below grade level, on to the more systematic "New True Books" (Childrens), or the "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out" series (HarperCollins).
