Sheila Buff has been a resident of the small town of Milan, in the mid–Hudson Valley, since 1987. She is a founding member of her local community-supported organic farm, where she is head vegetable washer and teaches classes in pickling, preserving, and cheese-making. In addition to her extensive work as a medical writer, she is the author of several books about the Hudson Valley and the outdoors, including Birding for Beginners (Falcon Guides), Insiders' Guide to the Hudson River Valley (Globe Pequot), and Traditional Country Skills (Lyons Press). She is also the author of the revised edition of Exploring the Appalachian Trail: Hikes in the Mid-Atlantic States (Stackpole Books).
